A rustic Tyrolean mountain refuge where nature’s tranquility, 100% organic living, and community spirit offer a rejuvenating escape from the modern world.

Biohotel Stillebach is a peaceful eco-hotel tucked in the tiny hamlet of Stillebach in Tyrol’s Pitztal Valley – a place so quiet, even its name means “Silent Stream.” Framed by towering peaks and a dramatic waterfall, this historic inn turned bio-hotel offers a simpler, more mindful kind of holiday that nourishes body and soul. Run by the third generation of the Glatzl (formerly Dablander) family, Stillebach has authenticity etched into its wooden beams. The hotel’s origins date back over 90 years; it has evolved from an alpine farmhouse with guest rooms to one of Austria’s earliest certified organic hotels, all while retaining a nostalgic charm. When you arrive, don’t be surprised to see the owner baking spelt bread or tending the herb garden – it’s a hands-on, family affair here. The setting is truly special: at 1,400 m altitude, Stillebach is an outpost at the end of the road, literally. There’s no through traffic – just forests, meadows, and high mountains encircling you. Outside the hotel’s front door, a natural pond fed by spring water reflects the sky, and a short stroll away, the wild Galltür waterfall cascades down cliffs, creating a soothing soundtrack alongside the chirping of birds. With the Pitztal Nature Park as its backyard, the hotel is an ideal base for immersing in nature. Sustainability and organic ethos permeate everything at Biohotel Stillebach. As they proudly say, “We don’t do 100% organic, we live organic!”. The hotel achieved climate-neutral status years ago and has since gone climate-positive – meaning they offset more CO₂ than they emit. It’s been EHC-certified (Energy-efficient & climate-friendly hotel) since 2012, constantly tracking and reducing its carbon footprint. Heating is provided by a biomass wood-chip system and efficient heat recovery, and electricity is 100% renewable (partially self-produced via solar panels). Waste is diligently separated and minimized; they even use returnable glass bottles and compost organic waste for their garden. The entire property is cleaned with eco-friendly products, and rooms feature water-saving fixtures and no single-use plastics. The hotel was one of the first to publish a Common Good Balance Sheet, aligning with the “Economy for the Common Good” movement to transparently measure its social and ecological impact. All this might sound technical, but as a guest, what you’ll feel is simply how refreshingly pure and genuine everything is. For instance, open your window at night and you’ll hear the Stillebach creek and maybe an owl – no cars, no noise – and breathe crisp air scented with pine. Sleep comes easily on the comfortable beds (no electromagnetic pollution, as they turn off Wi-Fi at night and offer to kill room power for sensitive sleepers). The rooms are simple, cozy, and spotless, many with balconies. They’re not ostentatious – think clean pine furniture, checkered curtains, perhaps a vintage Tyrolean wardrobe – but they have everything you need and nothing frivolous. Culinary offerings at Stillebach are a highlight, especially for health-conscious guests. The hotel has been 100% organic certified since joining BIO HOTELS in 2011. The day begins with a plentiful breakfast buffet featuring house-made granola, organic farm yogurts, oven-warm bread (from ancient grains like spelt and rye, full of flavor), local butter and cheeses, and an array of herbal teas – many picked from their own garden or nearby meadows. They even provide an alkaline breakfast corner for those doing the hotel’s signature “Basenfasten” alkaline cleanse. Indeed, Stillebach is known for its fasting and detox programs. Guests can book an alkaline fasting week, during which the kitchen serves entirely alkaline-forming plant-based meals designed to gently detoxify (while you still enjoy delicious vegetable broths, fruit platters, and creative light dishes). But if you’re not fasting, fear not – the kitchen pleases all palates. Lunch and dinner emphasize hearty Tyrolean and Austrian classics made healthy: maybe a organic beef goulash with spelt dumplings, or a vegan spinach-potato casserole. Salads and vegetables take center stage, and the chefs excel in accommodating allergies or preferences (gluten-free, dairy-free, etc., just ask). At afternoon tea-time, you’ll find perhaps a rustic buckwheat cake with plum compote or slices of dense seed bread with spread, perfect after a hike. Many ingredients come from nearby – eggs from a farmer in the next village, wild herbs foraged by the staff, venison occasionally donated by a hunter friend. The motto at meals is “enjoy consciously”, and indeed guests often comment how satisfied but light they feel. Stillebach invites guests to truly engage with nature and local culture. The activities are low-tech and fulfilling: guided hikes through the Kaunergrat Nature Park to spot chamois or discover rare alpine flowers; meditative walks by torchlight to the waterfall; fishing in the mountain stream (the chef might cook your catch for you!); or visiting the historic “Glacier Mill” (Glazer’s Mill) that the family has restored into a tiny museum on site – a nod to both heritage and sustainability. In winter, you can borrow snowshoes or hop on the free ski bus (with a stop just outside) to reach Pitztal’s ski areas and return to the tranquility afterwards. There’s even a small indoor bouldering wall (“Kletterstadl”) for climbing enthusiasts and kids on a lazy afternoon. After outdoor adventures, the hotel’s petite spa area beckons: a panoramic sauna with views of snowy forests, an infrared cabin, and a relaxation room where you can sip mountain herbal tea while wrapped in your robe. They also offer massages ranging from classic to aromatherapy, using all-natural oils of course. A unique feature is the Kneipp hydrotherapy facilities: Stillebach has an outdoor Kneipp cold water path and basin, so you can practice the traditional alternating hot-cold foot bath technique using the pure spring water – fantastic for circulation and the immune system. Community and connection are fostered here in subtle ways. The hotel’s size and ethos naturally brings guests together – solo travelers, couples, even the occasional family (yes, children are welcome and even have a playground, but the vibe is quiet, so families who come are usually nature-loving and considerate). The lounge areas have books on mountaineering and herbal medicine; you might find yourself chatting with others about the day’s hike or trading tips on holistic wellness. The hosts often join guests for a coffee or lead a guided meditation session, sharing their knowledge on living sustainably. One evening a week might feature local folk music or a documentary screening about the Pitztal’s wildlife, enhancing that sense of place. In the end, a stay at Biohotel Stillebach feels a bit like retreating to a simpler era – but one equipped with the best of modern organic comforts and principles. You come to slow down and realign: eat cleanly, breathe deeply, perhaps do digital detox (it’s easy here, given the expansive outdoors and spotty cell signal that encourages you to put the phone away). Many guests return annually, treating it as an essential reset for body and mind. When you depart, you carry a piece of Stillebach’s silent valley in your heart – maybe it’s the new habit of doing Kneipp foot baths in the morning, or a recipe for nettle pesto from the chef, or just the newfound appreciation for “being in the here and now” that the mountains taught you. As their philosophy states: “We see the whole picture” – at Stillebach, you experience a holistic harmony between nature, wellness, and genuine Tyrolean hospitality, leaving you rejuvenated and inspired to live a little more simply and sustainably back home.
